Waikawau Bay is a lovely, 2.5-km sandy beach, with shorebirds at the estuary at the north end; the Children’s Forest at the north end of the bay, planted by Colville School children and Moehau Environment Group, who have done extensive pest management in the area; and the Tsunami Trail, a 10-min walk up an incline across from Waikawau Bay Campground, with young kauris and views over the bay.
Day use access to the beach is from the south end (near Matamataharakeke). Park either in the pump paddock carpark (700m south of Waikawau Bay Camp entrance), which is across from the Matamataharakeke Camp, or drive 300m to the end of the access road from that carpark to the boat ramp. Toilet in campground. This walk can easily be done after completing the Matamataharakeke Walking Track that begins opposite the pump paddock carpark.
