Where is Coromandel?
Coromandel is located 50 km north of Thames, about half way up the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, which is near Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand.
Is it a town or a Peninsula?
It’s both! There is Coromandel (which is the town), and there is The Coromandel Peninsula. This website is all about Coromandel town, and its beautiful surrounds.
How long does it take to get there?
It takes about 2.5 hrs to drive here from Auckland, Hamilton or Tauranga.
We recommend you start your holiday the minute you get to Thames and set your clocks to ‘Coromanderl time’.
Stop for refreshments in Thames, or better yet, drive on for another 10 minutes and stop at Waiomu Beach Cafe. They do great coffee and food. From there it’s another 45 minutes up the stunning coast to Coromandel town.
If you come by ferry from downtown Auckland you’ll sail across the beautiful Hauraki Gulf in 2 hours. The ferry doesn’t always go so check with us first before planning to come that way.
Where does the name come from?
The name Coromandel comes from an old British sailing ship by the same name that came here in the 1800’s. It was first given to the town, and later to the whole Peninsula.
What is there to do?
Lots! You’ll best have a look at the things to do page here to get a really good idea.
Can we get there in a day and back?
Yes! It’s only 2.5 hrs from Auckland, Tauranga or Hamilton by car. If you take the morning ferry from Auckland you can be back in the evening (check with us to see if the ferry is going).
However most people find there is much more to do than you can fit in one day.
