Coromandel Coastal Walkway & Mountain Bike Track

At the top of the peninsula, and at the top of the list of things to do, this stunning coastal walk between Fletcher Bay and Stony Bay, crosses farmland and beautiful native bush with views of Pinnacles and Aotea/Great Barrier Island to the north and Cuvier (Repanga) Island to the east.

This stunning coastal walk between Fletcher Bay and Stony Bay crosses undulating farmland at the Fletcher Bay end (with orange bollards to guide your way). The rest of the track goes through coastal forest with views of pinnacles and Aotea/Great Barrier Island to the north and Cuvier (Repanga) Island to the east. It is part of an old bridle path formed by early pioneers to link the two bays. The track follows a generally easy gradient, however the track is narrow in parts with  steep dropoffs. If you suffer from vertigo or a fear of heights you may to reconsider walking the full track as you are able to walk as much of the track as you want then return to your vehicle.  Poley Bay is the only place along the track with access to the sea. Swimming not advised as hazardous rocks.

  Track Description: You can start your walk from either the end of Fletcher Bay Rd, Fletcher Bay (63 km/105 min) or Stony Bay Rd, Port Charles (52 km/90 min) north of Coromandel Town . Travel is on a gravel road just past Colville. 

Walk or mountain bike between Fletcher Bay and Stony Bay (no dogs). The walking track is 7-hr/20-km return; Fletcher to Poley Bay 1 hr; Fletcher to Lookout 2 hr; Stony Bay to Lookout 1.5 hr. Toilets in campgrounds.

Ask our team at the Information Centre about different options to make the most of your day with full-day return trips from Coromandel and Colville via both sides of the peninsula, thereby enjoying a shorter, 3.5-hour walk of the entire track and return to Coromandel or Colville. You will be dropped off at Stony Bay, picked up at Fletcher Bay, make a few other stops, and hear some great stories along the way during the van trip.

Mountain Bike Track — The challenging mountain bike track (no dogs — 8 km one way, Grade 5) follows a stock route across farmland and regenerating forest, with views of the ranges and Hauraki Gulf islands. This is a steep traverse, often slippery, and only suitable for advanced riders with a good level of fitness. You can also walk this track, and mountain bike riders are allowed to use the walking track, but must give way to walkers.

From Stony Bay campsite, orange triangles mark the track, which turns left at the ford and past two houses. The track continues over farmland for a short distance and then heads up a steep clay track.

Allow 1.5 hrs to reach the top. Following the fence line down, there are views of Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay. The two tracks meet below a derelict hut just north of Poley Bay and from there it is another 40 min to Fletcher Bay. Returning to Stony Bay from this point will take about 2.5 hrs.
