- track category: Easiest
- track length: 10-km return
- walking time: 2.5-hr return
- track start location: see map below
- km from town: 25km
Track Description: 2289 Colville Rd, Colville; 25 km/30 min north of town (dogs okay) – 2 ½-hr/10-km return.
From the carpark by a beautifully mosaicked public toilet, walk 40m north, turn left on dirt access road for 400m, then a short curve to the right before turning left at T intersection at Wood Rd. Continue for 200m and turn right on road to Colville Cemetery. Be sure to latch the closed gate to keep the cattle in their paddock!
After viewing this historic site, return the way you came and go left on Wood Rd. This takes you past a wetland and a few houses before you continue left onto Wharf Rd for 2.5km to view an old Maori fish trap, visible at low to mid-tide.
Return the way you came but continue left on Wharf Rd and over the bridge, then right on Colville Rd and back through town where you may want to stop for refreshments, visit the General Store, or check out some of the art.
Walking in the opposite direction on Colville Rd will take you to the foreshore reserve. A longer walk can be made by turning right after descending the road from the cemetery. You can continue walking gradually uphill on Wood Rd for about 20 min. Then just before the road ends at a private road there is a dirt track on the left that you can take through the bush for a bit of a wander that would give you an extra hour of exercise.
