Roadtrip to Coromandel town
It’s really easy to get here, and it’ll only take you 2.5 hours from the centres of Auckland, Hamilton or Tauranga.
Once you have passed the township of Thames you can set your clocks to ‘Coromandel time‘ a local expression for the laid back culture which encourages a relaxed atmosphere that is better understood once experienced.
From Thames it’s about an hours travel along the coast. A picturesque and pleasant coastal road winds its way up the western side of the Peninsula. Enjoy stunning views with many photo opportunities.
We can recommend you stop 10 minutes past Thames at Waiomu Beach Cafe for excellent coffee and refreshments.
And if you choose to come by ferry, you’ll enjoy a scenic and relaxed cruise across the beautiful Hauraki Gulf in only 2 hours from downtown Auckland right into Coromandel town.

The 360 Discovery Ferry from Auckland can bring you across through the beautiful Hauraki Gulf via Orapiu, Waiheke Island. Enjoy a day out, a weekend – or longer – in Coromandel Town.
The ferry operates between Labour Weekend and Easter.
Departing from Pier 3 at the Auckland viaduct arriving at Hannafords’ Wharf, 10kms from Coromandel Town. There is a FREE shuttle pick up service which transports you to and from the ferry landing into Coromandel township. (Awaiting you as you arrive from Auckland and departing from the main car park in the centre of Town 30 minutes before the ferry sailing on your return journey.)
Please note: the shuttle cannot take bikes, so cyclists are required to ride them to and from Hannafords’ Wharf.
